Annual Envirothon Competition

The Northampton County Envirothon is a unique environmental education experience for students, teachers, and parents. Hosted by the Northampton County Conservation District, with support from local volunteers, businesses, and sponsors, this event has been running since 1998.

The Envirothon program began in Pennsylvania in 1979 as a hands-on environmental competition for high school students. Over the years, it has expanded across the state and nationwide, growing to include students from multiple states and counties. In Northampton County, we invite all 15 high schools, along with home and charter schools, to participate, with a goal to include teams from every local school.

Purpose

Goals

  • To inspire students to learn more about the natural environment through fun and competitive events.

  • To encourage a deeper appreciation of how our actions impact the environment.

  • To provide hands-on experiences that help students grow into environmentally-conscious adults.

Participants will gain knowledge about:

  1. The impact of individual actions on environmental issues.

  2. How different parts of the environment are interconnected.

  3. Renewable and non-renewable resources.

  4. Current environmental challenges.

  5. Local organizations and resources that support environmental initiatives.

The Envirothon combines hands-on learning, competition, and outdoor experiences to engage students in environmental education. It integrates various scientific disciplines, helping schools teach environmental science with the support of local community resources. Teams of high school students compete to solve environmental problems, with winners advancing to the Pennsylvania Envirothon and potentially the North American Envirothon. Envirothon fosters collaboration between schools and local Conservation Districts, offering students real-world insights into environmental careers. With its dynamic curriculum and strong community involvement, Envirothon provides a hands-on approach to environmental education, helping to address the growing need for such programs in schools.
